What does the code Crankshaft and Cambelt out of phase mean on a 2002 Honda CRV?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

whilst slowing down to stop at lights my crv started shuddering then died, after a few moments I managed to get it to start but the engine management light was on and the car was in 'limp home' mode. when I stopped at another set of lights the same thing happened again.  a friend put it on his code reader and it said "Crankshaft and Cambelt out of phase" anybody know what this means before I have to go to a main dealer?

Sounds like it jumped time, even with a chain, They can stretch or tensioner fail: http://www.crvownersclub.com/forums/19-maintenance-service/9329-02-crv-timing-belt-chain.html ...especially if you have 120,000 ± miles or so on it

thank you that's what I had feeling it was it has done over 120,000 miles. I only got it in April and typically the warranty has finished. do you know whether its a chain or belt?

It's a chain. That picture is not a generic, it is an actual picture of the 2002 Honda CRV engine with timing cover off. the orange thing on top is the tensioner, if it has failed the chain will flop around and jump time

Most questions may be answered by a call to the parts store, however I believe it's like my 2000 with a 2.0li 4 cyl. It has a t-belt & not a chain. If you have to replace the belt buy the complete t-belt set. It will include a new t-belt, water pump, and all new idler and tensioner pulleys involved with the job. When I do these type jobs I usually change all three oil seals too insuring that the engine will continue to last for at least another 100,000 miles without any problems. I'll be happy to answer any and all questions regarding tools, procedures, etc. and I do hope this was helpful
