Probably different issues. There is a switch on the brake pedal which allows the vehicle to be shifted out of park when the key is in the on position. Did you shift into park when the vehicle was still moving, even slightly? If so it is possible the park pawl was bent inside the transmission. Is the battery low or dead? If there is a bad battery the vehicle will not shift out of park. Start checking.
