a bang? ominous- that 327 is an old, old engine- has it been rebuilt? I would take the plugs out and check their condition then do a compression test- could be a number of things, maybe even a timing chain- like I said, everything in that engine is ancient

i was thinking timingchain also no it has not been rebuilt this is a 100% unrestored 42,000 mile car it is ancient but it ran beautiful

well, its carbed so as long as it sucks are and the pump works its getting fuel. Do a test for spark

amazing that an engine can run that long- in original condition- I would think just metal fatigue would stop it - wrap your head around an engine rebuild with all components checked for stress cracks- pistons, crank, cam, block etc.
