Recommended shifting speeds for 2002 subaru impreza outback sport

Asked by coplinryan May 16, 2014 at 06:34 PM about the 2002 Subaru Impreza

Question type: General

I just got my first subaru and first AWD vehicle being a 5 speed 2002 subaru impreza /
outback sport wagon. I noticed that the manual gives a recommended shifting speed of
3rd to 4th at 40 mph which is normal. However, it goes on to recommend shifting from 4th
to 5th at 45 mph. This seems a bit early to shift into 5th gear. Is this specifically due to
the type of transmission or because its an AWD?

Generally for gas mileage, I shift from second to third at around 20-25 mph, from third to fourth at 30-35 mph, and from fourth to fifth at 40-45. On manual Subarus, the gearing is fairly low to aid in acceleration, which is why they allow for such early shifting. However, if I'm really winding out the engine, I'll shift from 4th to 5th at around 60-70 mph.
