Why did my low beam headlights and fan go off while driving at night?

The low beam headlights go on automatically at night.  However the headlights turned off while we were driving.  The heater/AC fan also turned off.  The battery light went on.  We tried to turn on the headlights manually, but that did not work.  We had to push the bright headlight lever and held it in order to keep driving.
