why are my fas not on in my Niessan sentra 98 car when it starts?

My car was smoking from botton front area near dirivers side, then when I turn on ignition the fans do not start, but the car starts and will run.  I am scared to run the car without the fans on, can I drive without fans running?

Fans will only run if needed. What is the temp gauge indicating on your dashboard? Is it overheating? You can test it by letting your car running on park position. Fans should start to keep the temp stable at the middle of the gauge.
