Kia Niro PHEV won't start

Question type: General

I just had the exact same problem with starting my year old Kia plugin hybrid as was asked on this site.  System check said regenerative braking wasn't working,  Car depressed the brake petal during this period, which I was already pressing to start.  Then it said Key Not Recognized.  Then completely dead, no response.  Etc.  Problem easily fixed.  I connected a 12V charger to the 12V battery in the rear right battery compartment.   Initially it charged at 9 amps almost tripping the charger breaker.  Within a minute or two it settled down to 6 amps.  After 5-10 minutes at 6 amps it started and behaved completely normally.  The charger was still connected and I left it charging for another hour or so.  No problems since.  I read somewhere on this page that discharge of this battery can be caused by leaving the rear door open, or not fully closed.  I do think this is what happened in my case as the door had not been fully closed for quite some time, perhaps overnight.  Anyhow, in my case not a big deal.  As to towing to the dealer, if the road assistance vehicle has a 12V charger (they all do) there would be not need to tow it anywhere.  Note, I did not try to jump start the PHEV immediately, but rather charged it for 5-10 minutes and it started itself but with the charger still connected.  I imagine it would have started without the charger still connected as well.

Ha Ha About a month after posting this answer (it was not a question) I got it back to me to see if my question had been answered. At that point 10 people had viewed it but no one had answered my question because it wasn't really a question. It was a general answer to a question posted previously with conflicting and amusing answers at that time. Nothing wrong there, this web-based system is set up for questions and answers. NOT answers without questions. Great resource though. Love my Kia Niro plugin hybrid.

exactly the same problem I had. I was trying to look for the "12v reset button", but couldn't find it. Ok, I will get a 12v charger tomorrow. Thanks!

Same problem with our 2018 phev. If you leave the door or trunk open for a while, the tiny 12v battery drains. Had it happen a couple of times in remote camping places where getting stuck 40 miles from the closest desert town is truly dangerous. Kia mechanic said I could always turn off the main electric switch (which on a phew Niro is not on the dash but hidden in the fuse compartment left of the steering wheel) when planning to open doors a lot or leave the car unused for many days. In order to prepare for possibly getting stuck in the boonies again, we tested turning off the main switch, leaving doors open, then turning on the main switch again. It seems to work if the doors are left open half an hour or so. But when we tested it with switch off and door and trunk open for 2 hours, uh oh. The 12v batter still read 12v but when the starter was pressed the car would begin to rev up, then falter and give a fault message about the regenerative brakes not working. At that point, jumping the 12v with a battery pack did not allow the car to start, scary. Fortunately after sitting overnight the car started with a successful jump from a battery pack. CONCLUSION: Bad software, insufficient 12v battery, crappy design that Kia needs to recall and fix.

Did you use your warranty "Mark helpful"? How did that go?

Everyone on this post seems to know a lot about the kia plug in hybrid which i certainly do not. I leased it in California to save on gas (a 2019 model). It has 10k miles on it and I now live in GA. 13 days ago, I drove it roughly 300 miles from Savannah, got close to home (Braselton), and stopped at pub-lix to get a flu shot. came out, started up the car but it wouldn't move, in addition, every single icon was lit up on the dash like a xmas tree, and it was flashing "BSD error" (blind spot detection). could not get it to move. Long story short, i towed it to the nearest KIA, in buford and they have had it since then. the first 12 days they claimed they had no idea what was wrong and had kicked it up to the designer to figure it out, yesterday they called to tell me it was a bad cell on the hybrid battery and would be replacing it. I wonder how frequent this problem is?

cranberry31, did they actually replace the HV battery? I'm in Europe and owning an Optima PHEV, but having the exact same issue. Car is at the dealership now, and they are even having trouble communicating with the car, since it's completely locked electronically. They say, they are having access to Kia global service portal which should list all issues and fixes happened worldwide, so I'm wondering if the actual replacement happened for you and at which dealer in the US? Thanks.

Just had this issue, my son left the dome light on in the car, battery dead, a quick AAA jump and back to functionality
