wifes 2003 MPV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Had wife's van in last week due to hd to start a couple of times , yet it ran
good if she sat 5 minutes or so. Didn't want her to get stuck so took to shop
they replaced PCV valve and hoses intake gasket plugs and coils oil and
filters. As they were backing out of shop the whole right side of radiator blew
so we replaced radiator as well. Ran fine for 5 days and overheated yet temp
gauge was not reading anything and fan was not on. What should I be looking
for.

I am not familliar with that exact vehicle, but automotive cooling systems all pretty much function the same. It sounds like the cooling system was not properly filled/bled out and a large air pocket was trapped in or around the cylinders. When the coolant temp sensor is not reading it is most likely not in contact with the liquid, esp if it was functioning normally before. The air pocket cannot be overcome by the pump, as the system can't build up enough pressure. When that happens what heated water that is in the engine can't flow, and it will 'overheat' and dump coolant out somewhere. Your mechanic needs to take another look at the work that was done.
