Engine shuts off while driving

Asked by Shawn Dec 28, 2020 at 12:17 PM about the 2000 Lincoln Town Car

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was getting off of the freeway after driving for 20 minutes.
Made a right turn off the exit and engine shut off and
steering locked up. What would cause this?

The power steering pump is belt driven by the engine. When the engine stops you lose power assist. You can still steer the vehicle but with much greater effort. If this was an isolated incident I'd keep an eye on it for now. If it starts happening on a regular basis I'd suspect the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve is bad. Trying to track down something that only happened once isn't going to be possible. Especially on a 21 year old vehicle. Hope that helps! Jim
