Towing capacity Subaru Outback

Asked by Guru16QMF Sep 26, 2019 at 09:01 AM about the 2016 Subaru Outback

Question type: General

I have a steep gravel incline driveway at the cottage.  Would the 2.5i Outback
2016 be powerful enough to pull up a trailer load or 16ft boat with 110 hp
motor or would a 3.6 engine be recommended?  I currently have a front wheel
drive wagon and I can barely get up the hill without towing anything.   The rest
of my use (city/highway driving - not towing) would be totally fine with the
2.5i.

How much does the trailer loaded with the boat weigh? Sounds like you need a truck.

3,260

Of course the bigger 6 would work less hard towing a heavy load. Although my clients have great luck with the 2nd gen CVT with a 2.5i towing light and medium loads, I do worry about overheating the CVT when pulling uphill at length or heavy loads. Answer F_O_R's query. I'd also STRONGLY advise that you replace the skinny (16mm) rear anti- swaybar with Subaru's STi 20mm one to support the rear suspension, as I do with ALL 2010-2012 and 2015-2015+ OBs. The overall improvement in body control will be revelatory. Do keep tongue weight below 100lbs (50kg) as well.
