What would cause a vehicle to shut off while driving?

What would cause my vehicle to shut off
while driving? First time ever that this
happens since we have the car for about 6
yrs now.

Had the car towed literally no warning signs the check engine light has been on for about a year now however the car runs beautifully until 2 days ago going down the highway the card just stopped come to find out the motor is blown at a 132000 miles something internal inside the motor is broken or not working my mechanic says completely shot no warning signs nothing I can do except either replace the motor or so it without a motor I am very disappointed

Have our sportage 6 yrs never an issue, serviced every 6 months. It had only been serviced 2 weeks and then we drove up the coast the car died without warning on the motorway. Accelerator lost power then dash lights came on and car died without few seconds warning. Turns out electrical control unit let water in and blew
