Alternator

Asked by Dcr1 Dec 25, 2019 at 05:15 AM about the 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe with 81000 miles. Had the alternator replaced
Friday by a reputable repair shop. Tuesday the car would not start. Had it
towed to repair shop. Nothing from the newly installed alternator when
checked with the meter Just a bad part? Should anything else be checked?

Well it's rare to have a bad part but it does happen and if you said there's nothing at all coming from the alternator will and that's why it wouldn't start if you put in a new alternator again obviously the chance of getting a second bad alternator are slim to literally almost none so let me know what they found out when you said won't start you mean does it crank at all?

Thanks Jeff, When I tried to start the car it just clicked. When the tow truck came he jumped the car and it started. He said his meter indicated the battery was good, but nothing was coming from the alternator. Maybe a loose connection?

Yeah it could be but if nothing's coming from the alternator then either if I'm correct you got a new alternator put in and it could be a bad alternator I mean I don't know if you got it used or new but there's only one connection on an alternator just so you know and it's one electrical connection so if that's plugged in then the alternator is not doing its job of charging the batteries some reason some way I mean it could be a loose wire in the battery terminals somewhere but if I'm correct I think you said you got your alternator fixed and if the alternator still reading dead the match your problem. The alternator should not be reading dead if it's plugged in like I said and it's reading that it's not working then you just might have got unlucky if you got a new even a used one I just put a used one in my Buick and it's fine I've never had a bad used one but you can get bad used one you can even get bad brand new parts let me know what happens or if anything changes I will keep corresponding with you and try to help you figure this out

Thank again Jeff, The new alternator was installed Friday. Car dead on Tuesday. I had the car towed to the repair shop. Will know more tomorrow
