what is the difference in 2.5 i and 2.5 L subaru engines?

2.5 liters. I think you may have mistaken a L for an i.

I called a tech at Subaru. the 2.5 i shuts down 2 cylinder when in touring mode such as on a trip. It then runs on 2 cylinders saving on gas. The 2.5 i is in the some 2011, 2012 and all newer models. .

If Subaru has cylinder deactivation they seem to be keeping it a secret. Only one source (Automotive News) claims that they do.

2.5i is essentially a trim level. It implies the 2.5 liter (or 2.5L) naturally aspirated engine is used.
