Synthetic vs synthetic blend oil

I've never used synthetic oil in any vehicle I owned before because the manuel didn't call for it. My F-150 now states I should use synthetic or synthetic blend oil. I use the blend formula because of cost. Is the full synthetic blend any better? Also, I notice when I change the oil (every 5 thousand miles), the oil comes out almost as clean at the new oil going in. Is this unusual?

You are right the older vehicles do not like synthetic or synthetic blends. Newer vehicles do benefit from them however. There is no appreciable difference that you will notice between syn and blended syn. Full syn just responds a little better in extreme cold. Another advantage of syn is the longer period between changes. You do pay more for syn, but that cost is absorbed in less frequent changes. The fact that your engine oil comes out as clean as it went in is an excellent indicator of your engines internal condition and is not that unusual. Sounds like your engine is in great shape.

I purchased the vehicle in 2010 new. It will be two years old in September and It just turned ten thousand miles (I'm retired). The manuel indicates the oil should be changed at 7500 miles, but I could not see going a year between changes, so I do it every six months. Just did the 3rd change at 10K. Thanks for the info.

I have a 2002 F150 FX4 Lariat, with 268,580 plus miles, that's been well maintained. I'm currently using syn blend, can I go full syn?
