Radiator hoses

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Should the return hose to the radiator be so hot
that you cannot leave your hand on it? Replaced
water pump, and thermostat. Have plenty of heat in
car, and the temp gauge never says the engine  is
overheating... could there be air in the system? I
think I Have air out, but the return hose seems
really hot?

Use a non contact thermometer to measure the actual temperature of the hose. Measure the top hose at the thermostat too, that way you will see what the temperature drop is. You can get one of these thermometers for around $20.

Do not know how you bled the air but try bleeding like this. Remove cap from overflow tank fill with antifreeze to full mark leave cap off and then start vehicle and let idle once vehicle starts to reach operating temp thermostat starts to open antifreeze level in tank will drop add more antifreeze to full mark then put cap back. Also you will notice the antifreeze level will start to raise in tank this is normal once thermostat starts to open the level will drop.
