My 99 ford escort shut off while driving. Quit running and now when I turn the key nothing works, and it will not start anymore

My 99 escort stopped running as i was driving and now as i try to start it, turn the key on
and it does nothing. No bells, whistles, radio, ect.. The lights work, dim & bright. But it
seems as if there is no signal getting to the ignition switch.
