How do i get my c10 to stop burning up pickup coils?

Asked by Dustin Feb 23, 2020 at 08:42 AM about the 1984 Chevrolet C/K 10

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My c10 drains the battery if I leave it hooked up
and it's done burned up 3 starters and 3 pick up
coils. Other than that it runs like a dream. Anyone
know what the problem could be?

What type of alternator are you running? 10SI or 12SI? The 10SI use a remote mounted regulator and that can be causing you issues. From your description you have voltage regulation issues, ie voltage is too high and burning up components. You could check with a meter voltage at the coil. You should also check the grounds, make sure the big ground runs to the engine and then smaller grounds to components and chassis, and make sure they are all on clear metal.

I don't know what type of alternator I have I'll have to check when I get home. What voltage should it be running? And I'll make sure to check the grounds.
