can a diagnostic test find more than one part problem or do i have to test for indivdual problems?

can a diagnostic test find more than one problem even when they are closely related or do I have to pay again when first diagnosis is repaired?  Than pay for new part ($1,300 plus an additional 8 days without a car while paying for a rental car.
