front and rear axles

Asked by Scott Dec 30, 2011 at 04:58 PM about the 1986 Jeep CJ-7

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I am looking to acquire a cj 7 which has had rear axle swapped out with Ford. When job was performed, front and rear gears were not matched. Is there an easy quick solution to this challenge.

Depending on what gear ratio it has, it can be changed to match the front axle. It does take skill at matching and installing the new gears.

Or change the front to match the rear. As long as the front and rear ratios are within 1% of each other you will be fine. IE: front axle = 4.11:1 & rear axle = 4.10:1
