replace a ignition switch . Tried to start the car and the battery is dead . Is there a short some where

TEST BATTERY, MAYBE THERES A WIRE OFF YOU CONNECTED

You may have inadvertently left the switch in the Accessory On or Run position which could have run the battery down overnight. Otherwise, many battery shops with test your battery for free (make sure you charge it overnight first).
