What causes my Jaguar FX 2009 to drop a gear occasionally?

What causes auto gearbox to drop a gear occasionally?stopping and starting
again rectifies the problem.Dash lights say gear box fault.Diagnostic computer
says replace gearbox.However ,it travels hundreds of kms without any problem
before happening again!??

You might not necessarily have to replace the whole transmission, it just might be a sensor or solenoid issue. You would need to have the vehicle scanned with proper diagnostic equipment to determine what is causing the shifting issues. Any decent mechanic with the right tools can do this for you. Check when making an appointment.
